I love, love, love plaid scarves and I have so many of them, mostly bought on thrift stores. I’ve had this plaid skirt since I was a child. I decided to transform it into a scarf for a few reasons. First of all, I love its colors, the fabric is in good condition, and it’s autumn now here in Kosovo so I can’t go out without a scarf.
If you have a similar pleated or gathered skirt that you don’t wear, take some minutes of your time to make a beautiful scarf, by following the very easy steps below.
For the tutorial you’ll need:
- Your choice of skirt (pleated, gathered, etc.)
- Cotton thread
- Sewing machine – optional
- Pins
- Scissors
- Iron
First, a before picture of my skirt.
Start by removing the waistband. I used a seam ripper here.
If your skirt has pleats like mine did, iron them carefully.
After you finish ironing the fabric, trim the raw edges of the scarf and and try it on.
Next fold the fabric in half (lengthwise), right sides together to make a large band. Sew all along the edge and finish with a zig zag stitch. Turn the scarf to the right side and press it. Finish sewing the both sides of the scarf.
Thank you for visiting Diyclothes! Lots of love.
