Today’s tutorial will show you how to create these adorable fabric leaves, which would be a great addition to kids’ outfits, costumes, and more. For this specific tutorial, I used medium-weight linen scraps and any other fabric potentially works but the structure of the leaf may differ depending on fabric weight and how many geathers you create.
For the tutorial you’ll need:
- Fabric scraps
- Cotton thread to match your fabric
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Chalk or marker
- Iron
Cut a 15 x 4 cm (5.5 x1.6 inch) fabric rectangle and fold it half lengthwise (wrong sides facing together).
Lengthwise fold the fabric strip in half again and press. From the raw edge side, mark 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the center. Connect that point with the bottom folded edge diagonally as pictured.
Using a regular stitch length, stitch the diagonal and reinforce both ends.
Remove the extra fabric on the fold by cutting carefully close to the diagonal seam.
Press the fabric strip open. Using a larger stitch length, stitch 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) from the raw edge of the fabric strip.
Gently pull the bottom thread for the fabric to gather until a leaf shape is formed.
Fold the gathered strip in half with the right sides facing together and secure with pins in place.
Mark 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) away from the raw edge for the stitch line. Leave more fabric on the short ends and stitch closely on the gathered side.
Stitch using a regular stitch length. Clean the leaf by cutting extra fabric if needed and press open.
Your fabric leaf is ready to be attached to your chosen project!
Please share if you give this project a try! We would love to see your version of these tiny beautiful pieces.
